The Indian-American economist & Nobel Laureate Abhiit Banerjee received the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences along with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer in Stockholm. This prize was conferred to the laureates as a memoire of Alfred Nobel at the Nobel Prize Award ceremony. (Like an after party you can say)
Abhijit along with others received the prize in Economic Sciences for their experimental approach to alleviating poverty. However, apart from the theoretical discussions, let cut straight through the point! Abhijit sported his Dhoti game stong during the ceremony wearing a black bandhgala pairing it with a traditional dhoti which usually Bengalis wear. His wife, Esther on the other hand, too chose to wear Indian saree to the event.
The man pulled off his traditional Bengali attire so well
that it caught the attention of the desi Twitter. Taking this Dhoti swag to
twitter, users were quite impressed with Abhijit’s gestures and the dapper
outfit. As a Twitter user pointed out, he looks every bit the 'Bengali Bhadralok'
that Bengal is so proud of.
It would be interesting to point out that most erstwhile winners of the Nobel Prize from India have stuck to the dress code specified by the institution. For instance, when Amartya Sen received the Nobel in 1998 for Economics for his work related to famine and poverty, he too wore a formal black suit with white tie and tail.
