Every parent wants their child to grow and succeed with
flying colours. Parental aspiration has been a thing behind proper guidance
provided to the children with the best achievements. Children tend to learn more at
home than in school and hence get affected the most at the same place. Every
child’s leader is their parent who guides them in building up their will power and
ingesting dedication into them for a better run in the future. But excess
parental expectations can have ill effects too on the children.
Expecting perfection from the child not only makes the parent
overbearing but it makes them insensitive and after some point of time, it segregates
the parent from the child. Hypertension and self-criticism overpower the
child’s mind at an early age which can be very unhealthy. Unrealistic demand is
another factor of depression in children who are not able to stand up to their
parent’s expectations. This eventually leads to physical illness and the child
is unable to focus on goals any further.
Endless and intense pressure affects the child both mentally and physically. Children with depression due to such reasons become susceptible to illness like anxiety, fatigue and insomnia. Fear of decision making and failure leave a major impact on children. Their shortcomings urge them to ask for help every time even when they don’t need it. This is then layered with the decline in confidence level due to which the child refuses to compete in fear of failure and being a disappointment to the parents.
Academic failure has been one of the main reasons for children
being pressurised by parents to score even more than the passing marks. Losing
will bring breakdowns and giving up becomes the remedy for such children who
deny facing competition ahead. While the children who get constant support and
love from the family are generally more confident and successful in future.
Pushing children further than what is good for them can restrict them from the joys and challenges. Over expectations by the parents make success seem unattainable to the children when emphasised more on perfection. This reduces the sense of purpose and direction in a child’s life.
A healthy sense of self-worth and self-esteem needs to be
imbibed into the child so that he/she can accept the normal him/her. Few parents
refuse to accept the normalcy fact in their child and push them further than
what is called the full stop. Developing
security in the relationship and trust in your child’s potential can help you
discover unexpected and wonderful results. This will allow the child to be
independent and responsible for his own thoughts.
Finding the child’s strengths and an environment that nurtures it is very necessary for realistic growth since a report card the result wouldn’t guarantee the success for the rest of their lives. Hence, a balance of expectation and acceptance should be maintained while giving parental aspiration.
